Renowned architect Richard H. Fawell leads WHA’s growing Hospitality & Mixed-Use practice. He brings deep experience in a variety of project types including large mixed-use developments, hotels and resorts, and multiple types of residential, government, higher education, theater, and master planning projects. He oversees conceptual and design development, as well as client and team coordination and management for these complex undertakings.
Rick began his career with Cambridge, Massachusetts-based firm Benjamin Thompson Associates after working for four years in Helsinki, Finland. Prior to joining WHA, he served as VOA’s Design Principal and Group Leader for more than two decades, including managing principal for the VOA China offices in both Beijing and Shanghai, completing 30 masterplans and 30 design projects. His work has shaped the work, life, academic and performance landscape in cities around the world.
In Chicago, his projects have included the Navy Pier Renovation and Reconstruction program including Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Skyline Stage, the renovation of Marriott Michigan Avenue; the design of North Shore Westin Hotel and Conference Center, Rosemont Intercontinental, Lombard Westin and Conference Center, University Center vertical campus, and outside of Chicago the Milwaukee Theater, Colleges of Business at Illinois State University and the University of Wisconsin, Student Recreation Centers at the University of Illinois and at Fairmont State in West Virginia, winning AIA design awards and LEED certifying several of these projects. He has also completed projects for major hospitality brands including Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental, Marriott Residence Inn, Marriott, Renaissance, Sheraton and Westin.
Today, Rick continues to build upon his extensive hospitality and mixed-used portfolio. He is an active member in the real estate community and frequently speaks at hotel, resort, conference center, and higher education conferences. Rick has worked and lived in France, Finland, and China and enjoys studying and learning to speak different languages.
