Wright Heerema Architects had the unique opportunity to design for both the tenant and the building owner and developer. Motorola Solutions needed a modern, efficient workspace and lab environment that would support its operations and reflect its brand. In partnership with Torburn Partners, WHA designed a ground-up build-to-suit facility tailored to MSI’s needs while reducing the tenant’s overall square footage. The new building was positioned in a more strategic location within the campus, allowing Torburn to remove the former sprawling facility and redevelop the site for better use. The result is an office and lab building that advances both the tenant’s goals and the developer’s long-term vision for the property.
MSI’s new office spans three floors and includes a range of focus, collaboration, social, and innovation spaces. Compared to the previous office, the new workplace provides more meeting and conferencing rooms, along with a flexible training space that can open to host company town halls. Amenities throughout the building create opportunities to recharge, including barista bars on every floor and a top-floor terrace to enjoy fresh air.
WHA met with MSI stakeholders, developed solutions that addressed the project’s broader constraints, and led recommendations across user groups. Lab spaces are located primarily on the first floor, with less intensive labs on the second floor. Engineering workstations are also located on the second floor, while unassigned benching is placed on the third floor.
MSI wanted the space to reflect both its brand and its purpose while drawing inspiration from its environment. The design combines a modern, technology-driven aesthetic with cues from its South Florida setting with materials and colors. A standout element was integrated copper mesh that references Faraday cages used to test radios in labs.
The new Motorola Solutions office is a complete departure from the company’s previous workplace, creating a modern environment centered on innovation, collaboration, and client engagement. Through thoughtful planning and close stakeholder coordination, Wright Heerema Architects designed an office and lab building that supports the way MSI works today while reflecting its brand and advancing the developer’s long-term vision for the campus.
