The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is now relocated to the coveted Old Post Office in downtown Chicago. This 45,000 square foot office was downsized from an original 65,000 by removing what was an additional floor for office space. The old post office has very unique features that were kept and incorporated throughout the common corridors. The fourth floor had the old postmaster suite including the original wood paneling. WHA's palette had a base to respond to and to compliment so we were not recreating something historic, but rather having the spaces feel well integrated. One feature in particular that showcases this relationship is the custom terrazzo countertop in the reception area which has large pink fleck in it calling back to the pink in the tile of the main lobby. WHA worked through the pandemic by teaming up with Power Construction to view the space virtually using Matterport technology that takes a scan of a space to provide the right dimensions and an overall live view of CMAP.
